DIY Bubblegum Mirror

Happy Sunday guys and girls,

Hope you’ve had a lovely weekend. I’ve had a much-needed relaxing weekend after a busy week of trying to fill my room before moving in a couple weeks time. Who else gets extremely stressed out by an upcoming move? If you have any moving tips definitely send them my way. They’d be very appreciated.
For this week’s blog post, I put my DIY cap on and decided to up-cycle an old door mirror that I had lying around. I was inspired by Tuula Rose, who made a cream expanding foam mirror, and Courtney English, who made a bluey green mirror, on Instagram. Below are the supplies and 5 simple steps to creating your own bubblegum expanding foam mirror. I’ve also added some inspiration down below if you want to see how some other amazing creatives made their expanding foam mirrors. Head to my Instagram now if you’d like to see my video on the whole process.

Supplies

  • Expanding Foam

  • Newspaper or Drop Cloths

  • Door Mirror

Step 1: Lay Down a Foundation

Before you begin creating your mirror, I recommend laying a foundation of newspaper or a drop cloth to avoid getting expanding foam everywhere (believe me, it will go everywhere!). Wet and dry expanding foam is not easy to remove, so definitely put some kind of barrier between your mirror and the surface you’re working on. I also recommend wearing shoes and clothes that you don’t really care about in case the foam gets on those too.

Step 2: Shake it Like Polaroid Picture

Before you begin, remember to shake your bottle of expanding foam for the suggested amount of time. I think this helps the contents to become foam similarly to hair mousse lol.

Step 3: all about the Angle

I found that the angle that you hold the bottle at when spraying is super important. Be sure to hold the bottle down when spraying the foam. The bottom of the bottle should be straight up towards the sky.

Step 4: spray in a squiggle motion

I recommend moving the spray bottle in a back and forth (or squiggle) motion when spraying the foam. This creates more of a folding bubblegum effect rather than a weird foam effect.

Step 5: let it dry

Step 5 means being patient, unfortunately. While the foam appears to dry fast, it’s important you give it at least twelve hours to fully set and harden. After that amount of time you are free to take your mirror inside!

Thank you so much for reading this week’s blog post. Let me know if you’re thinking of giving the bubblegum mirror a go or if you have any other DIY projects that you’ve done recently. I’d love to hear more inspiration especially for my new flat. Check down below for some more expanding foam inspiration. Be sure to check back next week for a new blog post and have an amazing week friends!
